What is a gender specialist?
Today, many people are looking for specialized therapy or assessment services in the field of gender identity. Gender is an area of self-identity that is best described by each individual themselves, regardless of societal or family expectations. When a person's gender identity differs from how others perceive them or wish them to be, conflict can occur. Today, we recognize that self-determination in gender is healthy, and that gender expression and identity are normal parts of self-identity in all people, whatever their age, including children.
Gender specialists are highly trained to understand the complexity of gender, to stay current in the field, and to help people make sense of their own, or their child's, gender identity and expression. If you have questions about your own or a child's gender identity, you should only see a specialist in this field. Additionally, "reparative" therapy, designed to change a person's gender identity or expression, is now considered illegal and unethical by national organizations of therapists and medical professionals.
As an experienced gender specialist, and as an author whose ground-breaking books (Transitions of the Heart and The Transgender Child) have provided knowledge and comfort for many families, I bring a unique mix of expertise and empathy to my clinical work on gender. Please contact me for additional information or questions.
If you live outside California, and are seeking advice or referrals, please consider researching qualified providers in your area. In the US, the best way is through a national organization like Gender Spectrum or Psychology Today. Although I try to answer every query, finding local resources in your geographic area, is always the best option for medical and/or therapeutic services. I am available on a limited basis via telehealth for folks living in remote areas who cannot make it to my office. Please contact me for more details. My regular rates apply to telehealth.

If you are interested in having me speak to your university class, student group, PFLAG group, mental health group, or any other type of family advocacy group, please write me directly. My rates are negotiable and I’m very flexible about working with community groups and non-profits.
