And Rachel's new project.... Rachel is currently collaborating with Bay Area educator and writer Stephanie Brill on another first-of-its kind book, Transgender Children: A Handbook for Parents and Professionals. The book, to be published by Cleis Press in 2008, will include chapters on identifying transgenderism in young children, a short cultural history of transgenderism, information for parents on dealing with the school system and finding empathetic and knowledgeable health care practitioners, and how and when to self-disclose to family and friends. The authors will discuss the specific benefits and risks of surgery and hormone blockers in young children and teenagers. There will also be a chapter on specific information on what transgender teenagers should look for and expect when selecting and living at college. Quotes from parents and health practitioners and educators will be throughout the text. Two chapters will be specifically written for educators and health practitioners who may deal or are dealing with transgender children.
